Jay Leno vs. Letterman and then all those other guys who come afterward, like Conan and Craig Kilbourne (sp?)?? opinions?

Good question, although I see you asked it sometime in July, so nobody probably gives a shit at this point. But I will give you the definitive truth on late night (this is not opinion). Bill Maher is not "super intelligent". He is comparatively intelligent when you consider his competition on TV generally (although, I don't think I'd call any of the late night guys stupid...Conan is very intelligent). I used to watch Politically Incorrect quite a bit, but after awhile Maher's whining got to me. It is very easy to complain about everything under the sun (which he does), but offer little constructive input on how to change things. That's what Maher does, he sits there and complains and surrounds himself with either really dumb guests (so he looks smart) or zealots on the right or left (so he looks reasonable). Plus, his monologues are probably the worst of any late night host. He thinks people aren't laughing because they don't get it. No, we get it, it just wasn't funny. (Dennis Miller Syndrome). Kilborn is hit and miss, but I admire the looseness of the show. At times he can be what Letterman used to be (although you couldn't touch Letterman when he was in his prime). I enjoy Kilborn's arrogance schtick at times, but it can get tiresome. Kilborn gets the best musical guests because they are often lesser knowns (by necessity), so it is more interesting. Conan is the current favorite of the college crowd, and for good reason. He is probably the most intelligent guy on late night. Sometimes he gets a little too "Oh, I'm so ironic and witty" for his own good, but much of the time he is genuinely funny. Letterman, when he wants to be, is still the King of Late Night (although I am a little old school, for me Johnny Carson is the true Great One). But Letterman has coasted for quite some time, and I guess it was inevitable that he would get complacent and less unpredictable when he switched networks and times. But every once in awhile, something will wake him up and he will get irritated, and that is when Letterman is awesome. Jay Leno is a lightweight. A good guy, but very safe. His monologues are often well done, though. So here it is: The Greatest: Johnny Carson...and then... 1. David Letterman 2. Conan O'Brien 3. Craig Kilborn 4. Bill Maher 5. 6. Jay Leno

Letterman did a great job trying to make people not feel guilty for having a laugh after the terror. It was awesome to see people like Richard Holbrooke on his show, I mean who would have ever thought Dick H. would go on Letterman? I may disagree with Holbrooke on things, but I am glad he was on the show as a diplomat, and the same with the Woman who wrote the book "Germs". An intelligent discussion. Dave does well when he is serious too. Killbourne's musical guests are the best, I totally agree. His guests are also generally less well known, and this is good, because it gets tiring to see Aniston, Pitt, Clooney, Roberts, and the other A levels on all the time. It is good to explore the other thousands of people out there, not just the top 25. Killbourne's Yambo is also pretty funny, as is the randomness of his humour. I have to say I prefer Killbourne after Dave, and then Conan, and then Charlie Rose, and then Leno. Letterman Killbourne Conan Charlie Rose Leno Bill Maher

Posts: 0 (12/01/01 12:51:47) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	the only shows i'm talking about here are letterman, kilborn,o'brien, and leno. they're the only ones that count. as of 1993, letterman took over as the king of late night (he was originally supposed to host the tonight show after carson left). now i notice that the same thing that happened to carson is happening to letterman. he's starting to think about retirement and is grooming kilborn to be the next late show host. i think that's when cbs will really steal the late night viewers away from nbc. i watch letterman followed by kilborn every night and i see letterman as an older more toned down person than he was on nbc. i think that's because he's trying to be more "johnny carson like". but when kilborn got his show in '99, reminded me of when letterman started following carson in '82. to me, craig kilborn is the next johnny carson. i think when kilborn gets letterman's show, kilborn will be the new king of late night. right now his show is mainly a mixture of the carson tonight show, the daily show, and a little bit of letterman when he was on nbc and i think when he becomes the new late show host he'll bring allot of that with him (probably his extremely classy "library looking" set as well). i generate this conclusion from the fact that he is fresh and traditional at the same time. and if you don't believe me now i guess you'll have to wait and see.

He's not, as far as I can tell, an obnoxious gash-hound like Bill Marh, but perhaps that because he spends so much time looking at himself in the mirror. None of this has any bearing on their television skills, but, you know, I don't have any respect for their on-air style, either.

Dave Atell hosts it on Comedy Central: Him going around in some metropolis, or otherwise, getting loaded at different bars and interacting, often in an amusing manner, with strangers. The one he shot in Houston was hysterical. And if by late night shows you specifically mean talk shows: Conan is God.

Right now at least, he doesn't have near the charisma or staying power of a Carson or Letterman. But, you are right, he could develop into something great. And where do you get off ranking Conan O'Brien last in the list of late night hosts? You prefer Leno over O'Brien? Are you on crack? O'Brien is outstanding. He's got some of the off center humor of the Letterman of old, and he is more intelligent than any of the late night guys. Of course, if you live in Houston, he is on at about 2 a.m. Houston is the only city in the country where Conan doesn't follow immediately after Leno. He makes fun of Houston incessantly because of that, which is very funny. I liked it when he went to a Houston bus stop at 2 a.m. one morning and asked people there whether they watched his show. He also showed the late night commercials that run in Houston during his show (including Mattress Mac) and got lots of mileage out of that gag. Conan is awesome.

Posts: 0 (12/10/01 19:13:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	actually now that i think about it my new order is... 1.letterman 2.kilborn 3.stewart 4.o'brien 5.leno (i must have been on crack at the time i made my first list. lol.) and the reason why i give kilborn so much credit instead of conan is that you don't have to be intelligent to be a late night talkshow host. just funny and be a good speaker. conan o'brien is neither. sorry but whenever a kilborn rerun is on or golf highlights are on instead of the late late show i'll turn on conan and i'll turn right back to cbs. i see conan as a obnixious snl writer retro fitted into a talkshow host spot by lorne michaels. lorne michaels is a genious but conan just tried way too hard. i think that when kilborn takes over for letterman one day, i think that he will mature as far as humor goes. but besides that everything is already in place for him. by the way i live in ny. and i did see when conan was in that houston bus stop and talked to that guy named buffalo. lol.

Posts: 5 (06/20/02 23:12:07) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I think my ranking would go as follows: 1* Letterman 2* Kilborn 3* Stewart 4* O'Brien 5* Leno And, if anyone's just a bit curious, here's why: 1* Letterman's the undisputed king as far as I'm concerned. I loved his humor way back when, and I love it now. He, along with Kilborn, doesn't get starstruck by...well, anyone. The thing of it is, when it comes to celebrities - especially the younger set - Dave doesn't care who you think you are because he's been around longer and seen it all. Sure, he's gotten lethargic and apathetic about his own show, but it's all part of Dave. He just is that way. I love that he's cranky and grouchy and sometimes downright mean. I love that he calls his audience "kids". I love that he makes up little inside jokes that he repeats throughout the show, and if you haven't been watching since the start of the night's installment, you won't know what the hell he's talking about. I love that he's the type of guy who has the world on a string, but all he wants is a cup of coffee. I love that he's Dave - hosts will come and go, but nobody will ever again be Dave. 3* I had to throw Jon Stewart in the mix. Technically he's not a talk show host, but surely The Daily Show warrants mention. Jon and his TDS cohorts never fail to make me laugh at a world that seems hell-bent on depressing and scaring the bejesus out of itself. As anchor, Jon seems to be the only sane person in a room full of loons (Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, and the others) - which, perhaps, makes him the craziest one of them all. He is sardonic and perpetually fed-up with all the whatnot, and always says whatever comes into his head to anyone who happens to cross his path. I don't know about you guys, but Jon and The Daily Show help me sort through the madness of the world around me, and laugh at it at the same time. 4* I don't watch Conan much. In fact, I only watch him when someone I really like, i.e. Denis Leary, is on the show. But, I think he is a pretty funny guy and, failing that, simply precious. Really, he's like a puppy in that he appears cute and helpless, but he'll probably bite you and then feel bad and lick your face. Okay, analogy gone overboard! Anyway, as for the show itself, I just can't get into it. The humor is too slapsticky, or it's too lowbrow (contrary to popular belief, I do have my limits), or it just doesn't appeal to me. So, I like Conan, just not his show. 5* I like Jay Leno himself. He's just a big teddy bear and he has the goofiest little giggle that makes me laugh. But I don't watch The Tonight Show save for Headlines on Mondays. Leno tends to get kinda starstruck and play celebrity-ass-kiss and I really hate that. The humor of the show just doesn't appeal to me - I'm too cynical, I guess. So, as with Conan, I like the host but not the show. 2* Now, why did I save Kilborn for last? Because I felt like it. So there. I'm not going to sit here and say that those who don't like him "just don't get it" - that's ridiculous. Everyone has his/her own opinion, and there's a lot to be said for and against Craig Kilborn. Sure, he's narcissistic and comes off kinda schmucky. Sure, he's self-centered and self-important and self-(insert suffix of choice here). But, he's different. That's mostly what I like about him. He's not everyday self-deprecating like O'Brien, Stewart, and Letterman, but he's not above mocking himself and letting the humor come at his expense. What he lacks in interviewing skills he makes up for in his lack of caring who so-and-so is or what they do. Yeah, he'll have you on his show, but that's just it: It's his show. Don't get all huffy if he hasn't seen your movie or read your book. You'll notice he doesn't get all bent if so-and-so doesn't watch or has never seen The Late Late Show. Kilborn's kind of humor does echo that of Letterman's in his heyday in that it's very random and often totally out of left field. He even has a signature feature like the Top Ten list; Five Questions. And I love that it's just him up there. O'Brien had Andy Richter for a long time and now has Max Weinberg, Leno has Kevin Eubanks, even Letterman has Paul Shaffer. Sometimes Kilborn riffs a little with writer Mike Gibbons, but not every show. For the most part it's just one guy behind a desk. If anyone comes close to the late-night legend that is Letterman, it's Kilby. Oh, and both Carson Daly and Bill Maher were omitted because, well...no sir, I don't like them. *Sara J.

Maher's show is unique in that it actually has substance when talking about politics, there needs to be more of that. He's not arrogant, he's honest. (You're right, Dennis Miller isn't funny at all, he's long winded) Leno is Lame. I think everyone can agree on that. No thinking goes into his show, it's very bland and politically correct.

He is so freakin' dull, he sucks up to every guest that comes on to his show instead of challenging them. Have you ever noticed that his whole staff is teenage girls. I'm serious. He feels more secure with them present I suppose. Stewart, the daily show, is simply awesome! I didn't list it as a night show.

Walk around without, and this is the tricky part, concealing the fact that you are or are similar to a human female. The Kilster will hit on you with the amazing technique of asking you if you think he is great looking, and when that fails (and perhaps I assume too much here if thats so, then if that fails) will resort to asking you if you think specific features (e.g., pasty skin, squinty eyes, giant ass) are why hes so great looking. One gets the idea he was like this before he was a celeb. On the other hand, I've mellowed on Bill. One, as the show progressed he seemed to be trying to learn things (such as the branches of our government) and he pushed for not-so-famous guests just for kicks.

Conan's comedy bits are succinct and humorous. Also, Conan has morphed into a pretty good interviewer, not that you expect anything in-depth or serious from the Late Night guys. 2) JON STEWART--The 30 minute format helps this show and Jon has a great supporting cast. The comedy bits are usually good. Good interviwer, as well. 3) CRAIG KILBORN-- An acquired taste, I know, but Craiggers and Company have improved tremendously from their first season. I never get tired of Craig's 5 Question segments and his guests are usually more eclectic than even Conan's. I dig the man's demeanor, as well. 4) DAVID LETTERMAN--Just keeps sinking in my opinion. The biggest time waster of the bunch....and stop letting that unfunny announcer, that doofus Biff Henderson and Paul Schaffer do comedy bits. They are annoying and unfunny....A lethal combination. In fact, most of the comedy bits on Letterman do NOT work. I still prefer watching Dave interview guests over Leno, though. 5) JAY LENO--I only watch his show if there is a guest I really want to see. Other than that, The Tonight Show is insufferable. His writers are abysmal! Jay's monologue is my version of HELL. Unfunny, predictable, WAAAY too long..... I would rather watch paint dry and you can tell that Kevin Eubanks and the band feel the same way. Also, Jay is the most obseqious interviewer, not only on late night, but in ALL of Television. 6) CARSON DALY--He thinks he is really doing a great job, doesn't he? Can one person possibly BE more deluded?? Stick with puff pieces on The Backstreet Boys over at TRL, Carson. This is the best NBC could come up with to follow Conan? A really SAD attempt. He makes Jay Leno look like William F. Buckley, for chrissakes! Just my opinion.......

I completely agree with everything this person says. I couldn't have said 90% of it better myself. but i would rate letterman over kilborn because kilborn seems to have a constant rush of blood away from the head, if you know what i mean. he always seems to have hot model types on the show and just drools on them. it's really not that intellectually stimulating. letterman's show is stagnant, predictable and so on. but it's still well written and letterman is still a damn smart individual. and so i think i would place him in a close 3rd after the daily show (and that, only bc the daily show really is the only show that takes chances and thus, provides you with occasional very fresh comedy). and one more thing. i agree with you on the use of production crew on letterman being unfunny. however, i think paul shaeffer has a personal quality about him which is not to be underestimated. i mean, his reactions to some of dave's jokes are truly funny and spontaneous. i'm not saying he's the next richard pryor or anything. but if you had to rate talk show sidekicks. i don't see how paul isn't the best of all time. in my opinion. leno and carson daily are dead to me. and you left out space ghost coast to coast. that would come in at 4 if it didn't come on at 4, am that is. and the only reason it wouldn't be the number 1 spot is bc i think they've stopped making new ones. finally, i can't believe i'm fricking posting messages like this. not when i have about thirty spears that still need poison-tipping. and we have to prepare for the moon-god festival next wednesday too. i have to get off this internet.
